Boyds Bay NSW Marina Launch

The construction of a $30 million marina precinct at Boyds Bays will create 200 local jobs during development and 40 full time jobs once completed. The massive boost to maritime infrastructure in Tweed Heads was announced by New South Wales Lands Minister Tony Kelly 6 July 2009.Boyds Bay Marina will provide 185 marina berths, a 160-dry-boat storage facility, a waterfront marine-lifestyle complex and a fuel pontoon and unleaded refuelling facility, which are expected to help expose the Tweed to more boating and tourism- related business.

Mr Kelly said the development, if approved, would result in valuable economic benefits to the local economy.

“This exciting project will cater for growth in the recreational boating industry, improve boating and mooring facilities, and provide a devel- opment that is environmentally sustainable,” declared Mr Kelly.  “The Boyds Bay site is effectively the only site on the Tweed River suitable for such a facility, being close to the main channel and river entrance, and close to existing maritime facilities at the southern boat harbour.”

The project will be developed by Twin City Marina Consortium, a joint venture between Seymour Group and Watpac Property. Mr Kelly said the next stage of the project will involve the finalisation of commercial terms and signing of a development agreement. “This commercial model between the Department of Lands and the proponent is an agreement to lease, conditional on development approval. It will now be up to Twin City Marina Consortium to prepare a development application (DA), and I can assure the community that public consultation will occur as part of the development assessment process.”

The DA is expected to be completed in the next six months, with hopes that construction will begin in the following 12 months. The project will take several years to complete. Seymour Group and Watpac Limited chairman Kevin Seymour said the project firmly consolidates the Tweed's reputation as a boating paradise.
