Straddle Carrier Operation and Maintenance Course

The Straddle Carrier Operations and Maintenance (SCOM) course is designed for marine personnel who want to master the safe and efficient operation of straddle carriers used for lifting, moving, and standing vessels in a marina or boatyard environment. This hands-on, two-day course equips participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to operate and maintain straddle carriers, all while adhering to industry best practices.Under the guidance of an experienced instructor, you'll navigate a variety of real-world scenarios and variables you may encounter in the workplace. The course also covers crucial topics including Work Health and Safety (WHS), machine maintenance, pre-start checks, and effective lifting and stabilisation techniques.


Course Content:

  • Health & Safety: Safe operation of straddle carriers in a boatyard environment.
  • Maintenance & Pre-Start Checks: Regular machine maintenance, service, and safety checks.
  • Slings & Vessel Standing: Correct use of slings, stands, and blocking techniques.
  • Machine Operation & Communication: Efficient operation and communication during vessel handling.
  • Lifting & Returning Vessels: Best practices for lifting, standing, and returning vessels to the water.
  • Vessel Structure & Lifting Techniques: Understanding basic vessel structure and how to lift and stabilise vessels safely.
Course outcomes

Participants who successfully complete the course and assessments will earn nationally accredited units of competency, including:

  • TLID0007 - Operate specialised load-shifting equipment
  • MEM13015 - Work safely and effectively in manufacturing and engineering
  • MEM16006 - Organise and communicate information
Assessment Requirements

To achieve the nationally recognised Statement of Attainment, participants must complete all assessments, including:

  • Vessel logbook
  • Vessel lift video
  • In-class assessments

Participants have two years from completing the course's practical component to submit all required assessment materials. Participants must achieve 100% on all assessments to be deemed competent and achieve the units of competency. If assessments are not submitted within this timeframe, you must attend a practical session at your own expense again.

Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites for this course. However, participants must have access to a straddle carrier, vessels, boat stands, and a video-capable camera for assessment purposes.

This course is ideal for workers currently employed at boatyards or marinas who operate or work alongside straddle carrier operators. It’s an excellent opportunity to advance your skills and gain practical, hands-on experience under the guidance of seasoned industry instructors.

Course details  

Duration: Two-day in-person course, 8.30 am to 4.30 pm. 
Location: Onsite at a selected Boatyard Facility
Inclusions: Morning and afternoon tea and lunch provided 
Equipment required for the practical session: 

  • Enclosed shoes
  • Sun safe clothing such as a hat and long sleeves 
  • Water bottle

Equipment required for assessment purposes 

  • Straddle Carrier 
  • Vessels to lift using the Straddle Carrier 
  • Industry-approved boat stands and blocks 
  • Video and audio-capable camera 
  • Computer or mobile device capable of editing and sending video via online platforms
  • Scanner to digitalise vessel logbook to submit for assessment
